Standard emoji vs. custom server emoji

Discord supports both the standard Unicode emoji set everyone can see and custom emoji uploaded by a specific server, which only members of that server (or servers with Nitro-shared emoji) can use — the two look similar but come from different sources.

Opening the emoji picker

Clicking the smiley-face icon in the message box opens Discord's picker, split into tabs for standard emoji, custom server emoji, GIFs, and stickers, with a search bar that matches by name or shortcode.

Typing shortcodes for speed

Typing a colon followed by an emoji's name (like ':fire:') brings up an autocomplete list without needing to open the picker at all — the fastest way to add a specific emoji once you know its shortcode.

Reactions vs. inline emoji

Hovering over any message and clicking the reaction icon adds an emoji reaction to that specific message rather than typing it into your own — useful for quick acknowledgment without cluttering the channel with a full reply.
